Michael O’Keefe Reflects on ‘Caddyshack’ and Drug Use

Michael O’Keefe opened up about his experiences on the set of the iconic 1980 film “Caddyshack.” In a recent interview, he shared that cocaine was prevalent during filming and even mentioned that the drug expenses were included in the movie’s budget. “There was some miscellaneous item,” he noted.

“It was the 70s,” O’Keefe explained. “That’s just how it was. People treated it casually, like toothpaste, feeling the need to use it daily to stay in shape.” The film, shot in 1979 and released a year later, also featured stars like Ted Knight, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield, all unfolding the comedic chaos at the fictional Bushwood Country Club.

Looking back on his drug use, O’Keefe recalled using cocaine right before certain scenes. Now, he admits those memories aren’t his fondest and reflected, “it’s really not something I’m proud of.” However, he also emphasized that his experience during the movie marked the last time he engaged with drugs. He realized it wasn’t a healthy choice, despite the fun facade often presented by these substances.

A significant factor in his turnaround was the tragic passing of Doug Kenney, one of the film’s co-writers and producers. O’Keefe described Kenney’s death as a “huge wake-up call.” Kenney lost his life at the young age of 33 after a fall in Hawaii in 1980, a tragic reminder of the consequences of drug addiction.

O’Keefe recalled Kenney’s charm, calling him “one of the most affable, intelligent, funny people.” Unfortunately, he fell into addiction, which ultimately led to his demise, serving as a cautionary tale for O’Keefe.

Before “Caddyshack,” O’Keefe gained recognition from his role in “The Great Santini,” which earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. He also appeared in “Ironweed,” “Frozen River,” and more recently in the Apple TV series “Your Friends & Neighbors,” where he plays a father to Jon Hamm’s character. Despite his varied career, O’Keefe remains most recognized for his role as Danny Noonan in “Caddyshack.”

Reflecting on the impact of the film, he mentioned, “We often say we got lucky when we were young and didn’t fully grasp the opportunities we had.” He does appreciate being a part of “Caddyshack,” yet sometimes wishes for more acknowledgment of his other endeavours.

A touching moment for O’Keefe was when a wardrobe designer told him how her family watched “Caddyshack” together during her father’s illness. This revelation shifted his perspective on the film’s significance, recognizing the joy it brought to many, which ultimately means a lot to him.
