Penix’s NFL Season in Jeopardy
It seems Michael Penix’s second season in the NFL might have come to an abrupt end.
The Falcons quarterback exited during Sunday’s close game against the Panthers, which ended in a 30-27 overtime loss, due to a knee injury, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This could potentially signal the end of his season.
Penix was substituted by veteran Kirk Cousins, and the Falcons squandered a 21-7 lead, leaving their record at 3-7.
This streak of five consecutive losses has all but dashed the team’s playoff hopes.
Penix managed to complete 13 out of 16 passes for 175 yards before going down on an incomplete pass while attempting to regain his footing.
The precise details of his injury remain unclear as he seeks a secondary evaluation.
At just 25, Penix has had a notable season in Atlanta, connecting on 60% of his passes for a total of 1,982 yards, with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Earlier in the season, he dealt with a knee bone bruise from a match against the 49ers, which also forced Cousins to take over during a heavy 34-10 defeat against the Dolphins on October 26.
Now, with Cousins stepping back in as the full-time starter, there’s certainly a lot of pressure. He signed a hefty four-year, $180 million deal with the Falcons last offseason, but they ended up picking Penix in the first round shortly after.
Cousins, who is 37, has only played in three games this season and hasn’t yet thrown a touchdown, which is less than ideal.
“We’ve faced some tough losses and need to figure out how to turn those into wins,” commented Falcons coach Raheem Morris in light of Sunday’s defeat.
It’s a tough situation for the team as they prepare to face the Saints this coming Sunday.
