Porter Struggles in Nets Debut
Michael Porter Jr. is known for his offensive prowess, but the Nets are looking for him to step up in other aspects as well.
His debut with the Nets on Wednesday wasn’t the best showcase of his abilities.
In a 136-117 defeat against the Hornets, Porter managed to score 12 points but shot poorly—five out of 15 overall and just two of seven from three-point range. His contributions on rebounding and defense also left much to be desired.
“I didn’t feel as fresh as I needed to be. I think a lot of guys may have been a bit sluggish, just a second too slow,” Porter reflected afterward.
He finished the game with only four rebounds, sharing the unfortunate distinction of having the worst plus-minus, at minus-19.
Cam Thomas, who also had an off night, tied Porter in scoring, making just two of seven shots.
Coach Jordi Fernandez commented on the team’s offensive struggles, noting, “It’s hard to win if our top scorer doesn’t score. But it’s essential to keep fighting. If Mike and CT have a tough night, we still need to hustle for offensive rebounds and give ourselves a shot at winning.”
He emphasized the importance of making right plays and maintaining a positive impact, regardless of shot difficulties.
Porter had previously acknowledged the need to bolster his defense and rebounding skills, especially for a smaller Nets lineup.
“We’ve got to be really good on every possession, particularly with defensive rebounding,” he stated. “Starting a bit smaller means we don’t have the size we had in Denver. So it’s crucial to secure the glass and act as a rim protector.”
As for future roster plans, fans are eager to see who might become the Nets’ long-term core. Five first-round rookies are contenders, and the recent decision to exercise Noah Clowney’s team option for the 2026-27 season suggests he could also fit into those plans.
“It feels good to know they believe in me,” Clowney shared, expressing appreciation for the team’s faith in his future.
Next season, he is slated to earn $5,414,034.
In terms of player statuses, rookie Danny Wolf sprained his ankle during the morning shootaround and was deemed questionable for the game, but he ended up being ruled out. Before the game, he was seen walking without assistance.
The Nets are set to face the Cavs in their home opener on Friday.
To kick off the match, the Nets fielded a starting lineup featuring Ben Saraf, Cam Thomas, Terrence Mann, Porter, and Nick Claxton. Saraf made history as the second youngest player in Nets history to start a game.
