Nets’ Comeback Win Fueled by Frustration
It all stemmed from a place of frustration.
During a recent game in Orlando, Michael Porter Jr. struggled, going just 1 of 6 in the fourth quarter while the Nets built a 16-point lead. He finished with 1-for-3 shooting in a disappointing home loss to Boston on Tuesday.
By the end of the match at TD Garden on Friday, the 27-year-old forward was fed up.
As the Nets’ commanding 18-point lead dwindled to just 96-94 with under six minutes left, Egor Demin hit a crucial 3-pointer, stifling Boston’s comeback attempt. From then on, Porter found his rhythm, making 7 of 8 shots as the Nets secured the game, finishing on a 14-point streak for a 113-105 victory.
This win marked Brooklyn’s most significant triumph of the season, helping them dodge elimination from the NBA Cup.
After the game, Porter reflected, “It wasn’t just this year against Orlando where I felt like we weren’t as aggressive as we should have been in the fourth. It was also the last game against the Celtics. When I re-entered the game for the final seven minutes, I noticed I wasn’t being aggressive enough.” He added, “So on Friday, I decided not to let it be déjà vu. I was determined to be aggressive. Thankfully, things went well tonight. As a team, we maintained our composure and executed our offense effectively. If you can do that, you can navigate both triumphs and setbacks as long as you stay focused and proactive.”
Porter ended the game as the highest scorer with 33 points, shooting 13-of-21 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three-point range. This marked his eighth consecutive game with at least 20 points, setting a personal record for eight-game scoring streaks in his career.
Coach Jordi Fernandez commented that there will be no adjustments in the game plan to highlight Porter but emphasized the overall effort from the team to create those opportunities.
“Terrence thinks so. Mann set up the play, and Egor did well to adapt when the defense was forced to adjust. Claxton contributed as a playmaker. If you watched, we executed the same play several times—maybe three to six times. Mike is a great cutter, and it consistently yielded good results. It was exciting to watch. I always believed Mike could deliver a performance like this. I’m very pleased and proud of him,” said Fernandez.
Looking ahead, the Nets are set to challenge the Raptors, who are currently on a six-game winning streak. This streak was initiated by a 119-109 win over the Nets on November 11th.
Ben Saraf will be absent on Sunday due to a sprained left ankle, while Nick Claxton (left elbow sprain) and Egor Demin (neck/jaw soreness) are likely to play.
