New York City Celebrates Knicks’ First NBA Championship in 53 Years

After a long wait of 53 years, the New York Knicks have clinched their first NBA championship, igniting festivities across New York City. Tens of thousands of fans filled the streets of Manhattan for a historic ticker tape parade, transforming a typical Thursday into a festive holiday atmosphere.

Interestingly, there was a moment caught on video that went viral involving NBA champion Jalen Brunson from the Knicks and Michael Porter Jr., a prominent player for the Brooklyn Nets. They both arrived at a World Cup afterparty thrown by Justin Bieber in the city, creating quite a buzz.

Brunson, accompanied by his wife Ali, breezed through the party entrance, while Porter and former Nuggets teammate Peyton Watson had to navigate the guest list and security check. There’s a certain prestige that comes with being a star for the Knicks—it seems they don’t have to deal with the same entrance hurdles.

Despite the financial edge that Porter may have, with a salary of $37.7 million compared to Brunson’s $40.8 million, Brunson enjoys the coveted “King of New York” status. This status definitely has its perks; he and his wife were able to walk straight in, while Porter had to check in like everyone else.

The Knicks and their iconic franchise hold a special place in New York’s heart, especially with their historic win, which resonates deeply with the fan base. Madison Square Garden, often referred to as the “Mecca” of basketball, amplifies their storied legacy, contrasting with the newer Brooklyn Nets who, despite having some talented players, haven’t reached that same level of connection with the city’s fans.

In comparison, the Nets, who moved from New Jersey in 2012, have spent the last few seasons rebuilding their team. In his first season with the Nets during the 2025-26 period, Porter achieved career highs in points and assists, but the team struggled with a disappointing record in the Eastern Conference.

As the celebration unfolded, a security guard greeted Brunson with, “Mr. Brunson, how are you doing?” underscoring the special status he enjoys. While the Knicks bask in their glory, the contrasting experiences of their players create noteworthy discussions about the basketball landscape in New York.
