Michael Proctor Addresses Karen Reed Case Accusations
Former Massachusetts police officer Michael Proctor recently made headlines by laughing off suggestions that he attempted to frame Karen Reed after John O’Keefe’s death in 2022. During an interview on NBC’s “Dateline,” which aired Thursday night, Proctor responded to claims of corruption and misconduct regarding the investigation surrounding Reed, who is facing murder charges linked to her boyfriend, a Boston Police officer.
“It’s a ridiculous accusation, so I laugh,” Proctor remarked, emphasizing that there is no evidence to back such claims. He firmly stated, “I would never do that.” When asked about allegations involving a broken tail light on Reed’s Lexus, he responded bluntly, “Absolutely not.”
Proctor, the lead investigator in Reed’s case, highlighted some controversial text messages he shared regarding the investigation. These included derogatory remarks about Reed, and even comments suggesting that she should harm herself. In his defense, Proctor stated in the interview, “I should get my job back,” claiming he has received excellent evaluations and has faced no disciplinary actions.
Addressing the controversy over his text messages, Proctor questioned, “What do you have on your personal phone? Have you ever had a lapse in judgment?” He acknowledged letting his emotions influence him when sending the texts, adding that they don’t define him as a person.
In light of the case, Massachusetts Police Colonel Jeffrey Noble announced new policies aimed at enhancing accountability and professionalism. He stated that the past three years prompted a thorough review of police actions and emphasized a commitment to building public trust.
In a separate development, a jury found Reed guilty of operating a vehicle while her blood alcohol level was .08% or higher, although they did not convict her of second-degree murder. Following the trial, Special Counsel Hank Brennan suggested a year of probation for Reed.
Reed’s defenders argued during the trial that she did not strike O’Keefe, instead attributing his injuries to a dog attack. Witnesses testified that both Reed and O’Keefe were seen at a social gathering but did not attend an afterparty they were invited to.
