Michael Tilson Thomas to conduct NY Philharmonic’s opening subscription program

Michael Tilson Thomas will lead the New York Philharmonic’s regular season-opening program three years after the conductor announced he was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.

The 79-year-old will conduct the orchestra in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 14 and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 with Emanuel Ax on September 12, 13 and 15, the orchestra announced on Tuesday.

Tilson Thomas announced in August 2021 that he had undergone surgery for a brain tumor. Although he continues to lead an active schedule, the number of performances has decreased. Tilson Thomas conducted four concerts with the New York Philharmonic in March 2023. He is the founder of the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami Beach, Florida, and served as Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in Miami Beach, Florida. From 1995 to 2020.

The Philharmonic will be without a music director for two seasons. Jaap van Zweden will leave the Los Angeles Philharmonic this summer after six years, and Gustavo Dudamel will take charge from 2026 to 2027 after leaving the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Dudamel is leading a three-week subscription program that includes the world premieres of Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 11 and Mahler’s Seventh, a work written and sung by Kate Soper, with the first scheduled for March 2025. The second will be held in May 2025. He will conduct the Philharmonic Orchestra’s Park Concert for the first time in June 2025.

Mr. Dudamel will be named music director from 2025 to 2026. Since his debut in 2007, he has conducted the orchestra 29 times.

KenDavid Masur, son of former music director Kurt Masur, will conduct a new production by Augusta Reed Thomas on September 19th and 21st.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Music Director Manfred Honeck will conduct the opening gala on September 24th, and Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo will also be in attendance.

Herbert Blomstedt, who turns 97 in July, will conduct Schubert’s Sixth Symphony and Brahms’ Violin Concerto with Hilary Hahn from February 26 to March 2.

Soprano Renee Fleming and tenor Rod Gilfly will appear in Kevin Putz’s “The Brightness of Light” from May 16 to 18, 2025, conducted by Juanjo Mena.
