Michael Vick’s Coaching Journey Begins
Michael Vick made a remarkable impact during his college football days at Virginia Tech and went on to have a notable 13-season career in the NFL. After a stint in broadcasting, he has stepped into a coaching role.
Though he’s only had three games this season with Norfolk, rumors are swirling about a possible return to Virginia Tech now that the Hokies have parted ways with their head coach, Brent Pry, following a disappointing 0-3 start.
However, Vick has stated that his current focus is entirely on leading his team in Norfolk. “This team has to follow my lead,” he said, making it clear that he isn’t looking ahead to any potential coaching opportunities elsewhere. “My main focus right now is Norfolk State. That’s it. I haven’t really been paying attention to outside chatter, to be honest,” he added.
Vick’s coaching aspirations aren’t new. Before taking the helm in Norfolk, he trained as an intern under Chiefs Coach Andy Reid in Kansas City. He also held the position of offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Legends in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football in 2019.
His coaching journey has been something he’s thought about for quite a while. In 2017, Vick expressed interest in learning from seasoned coaches like Reid. With a college career that totaled 3,074 passing yards along with 20 touchdowns and 16 rushing touchdowns, his on-field experience is certainly notable.
Interestingly, Vick has also made headlines for being surpassed by Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in rushing yards for quarterbacks after Jackson ran for 87 yards in a recent game against the Texans.
The Atlanta Falcons selected Vick with the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, signaling the beginning of a significant football legacy. Currently, Norfolk State has a record of 1-2 and is looking ahead to their upcoming match against Sacred Heart on September 20th.
