Republican Candidate Criticizes Democratic Opponent for Prisons and Policy Stances
During a recent discussion on his show, North Carolina’s Republican Senate candidate, Michael Whatley, accused Democratic Senate hopeful Roy Cooper of aligning with socialist ideals.
When addressing the surge of socialist candidates nationwide, Whatley claimed Cooper was “flying the socialist flag” these days. He brought attention to Cooper’s actions from his time as governor during the pandemic, specifically referencing the release of a significant number of inmates.
“Back in 2021, Cooper let 4,200 criminals out of prison because he was afraid of COVID-19. These aren’t just any offenders; they include the worst types—pedophiles, rapists, and murderers. He put them back on the streets without regard for the victims or their families,” Whatley stated.
He argued that this decision sparked a crime surge in the state, noting that many of the released individuals went on to commit further offenses. “Out of that group, 700 were later arrested for violent crimes. Two thousand two hundred were arrested again, and 25 of them even went on to commit murders,” he elaborated, citing severe consequences stemming from Cooper’s decisions.
One notorious case mentioned was that of DeCarlos Brown Jr., who infamously murdered Ukrainian refugee Irina Zalutka on a train. Whatley also highlighted another individual released under similar circumstances who later took his daughter’s life during a fentanyl deal, illustrating the tragic fallout.
He stressed, “There are numerous families now with empty chairs at their holiday tables because Cooper let these killers go. That’s a permanent loss,” adding a grim conclusion: “Honestly, their blood is on Roy Cooper’s hands.”
Whatley’s critique didn’t stop at criminal justice. He also pointed out Cooper’s stance on other issues, notably his veto of a bill meant to prevent biological men from participating in women’s sports, locker rooms, and restrooms. “So, Roy Cooper, he’s essentially getting a free pass because he’s supporting the same agenda as the socialists,” he concluded.
