Joanne’s Craft Travel Shifts to Michaels

NEW YORK – The recently closed fabric retailer, Joanne’s Craft Travel, has found a new home with Michaels.

Michaels announced on Thursday that it has acquired Joanne’s intellectual property and private label brands, intending to enhance its own offerings in fabrics, sewing, and thread products.

In a statement, Michaels’ CEO David Boone expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Joanne’s former customers into their creative community, emphasizing their commitment to providing the desired choices and inspiration.

Boone also mentioned that this acquisition aligns with their goal to meet the increasing demand from both new and existing customers.

While the financial details of the acquisition remain under wraps, the Associated Press reached out to Michaels for further information on Friday.

The journey of Joanne’s Craft Travel dates back to a single store in Ohio from 1943. For over 80 years, it had been a go-to destination for enthusiasts of sewing, quilting, and knitting. However, in recent times, the company faced operational challenges stemming from shifts in consumer demand, stock shortages, and heightened competition.

In February, Joanne’s announced its closure shortly after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time within a year.

Michaels noted that the acquisition includes the popular “big twist” thread brand, long available at Joanne’s. These items will now be integrated into Michaels’ product line, set to be available both in stores and online later this year.

Additionally, Michaels has launched a dedicated landing page to welcome former Joanne’s customers.

As part of its effort to expand its fabric selection, Michaels revealed plans to introduce over 600 new products, including quilting supplies, specialized threads, and sewing machines.

Founded in 1973, Michaels currently runs about 1,300 stores across 49 states in the U.S. and Canada, also being connected with Artistree, known for its framing products.
