Michigan clarifies reasons for not terminating staff member involved in affair with Sherrone Moore

A Michigan university employee, linked to an “inappropriate relationship” with Sherone Moore, the recently fired football coach, is still employed at the institution, according to their policies on relationships between coaches and staff. This was clarified to USA Today by the university.

The policy outlines that a supervisor should not start or attempt to initiate an intimate relationship with someone under their authority. This guidance specifically pertains to Moore’s situation. If such relationships occur, they must be reported to the immediate supervisor and subsequently elevated to senior management.

In this instance, the obligation to report the relationship rested with Moore, the supervisor.

Moreover, any couples involved are required to agree on a management plan to remove any supervisory influence. In essence, this ensures fairness in the workplace environment when a relationship is involved.

The university has stated that no retaliation will occur against anyone who reports a breach of this policy. Dismissing the other party involved would violate university standards.

Reportedly, the woman involved informed university officials about a secret meeting since Moore had continued to contact her after their relationship ended.

The policy explicitly prohibits any form of retaliation against individuals who report potential violations, including intimidation or adverse conduct, particularly concerning someone’s employment. It ensures that those who participate in an investigation are protected from retaliation.

The unnamed employee is accused of entering the residence of executive assistant Paige Shiver.

During a court appearance, Washtenaw County Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski disclosed that there had been an “intimate relationship” between Moore and the woman, with their confrontation occurring shortly after their split.

Prosecutors allege that during this confrontation, Moore behaved threateningly, brandishing a butter knife and kitchen shears while making alarming statements.

He faces charges of felony burglary alongside two misdemeanor counts related to stalking and trespassing, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Moore was arraigned via Zoom and displayed a stark appearance in white clothing.

Just last week, Michigan State publicly acknowledged Moore’s firing for an inappropriate relationship with staff.

Married for ten years with three children, he and his wife Kelly were also noted in reports that labeled Moore’s situation as “the worst-kept secret” at the university.

The school’s official statement confirmed that Moore was terminated due to credible evidence pointing to policy violations involving a staff member.

Moore was taken into custody by local police shortly after his firing, as part of an ongoing investigation regarding potential charges. The authorities have indicated that this incident was likely not random and that there is no threat to the wider community.

Moore has one game remaining in his second season, guiding the Wolverines to a 9-3 record this year.

He had signed a five-year contract when he joined the university, allowing for termination under “just cause,” which helps the school avoid buyout payments.

Biff Poggi has stepped in as the interim coach for the upcoming Citrus Bowl game against Texas on December 31.
