The younger brother of Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee was shot and killed by his own son during a domestic dispute early Tuesday morning, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press conference.
Sheriff Chris Swanson said: “It’s a total tragedy. The families involved are well-known and well-loved families in this community.”
Sheriff Swanson said Timothy Kildee, 57, was killed by his son inside his Vienna Township home during a domestic dispute.
Swanson said the entire ordeal began around 3 a.m. and spanned three different scenes.

Swanson said Timothy Kildee’s son allegedly jumped out of a moving car being driven by his mother, Timothy Kildee’s ex-wife, shortly before the shooting occurred.
After the incident, the son allegedly went to Timothy Kildee’s home and brandished a gun during a verbal confrontation. He allegedly demanded that Timothy Kildee turn over his wallet and keys before shooting him.

The 27-year-old suspect then stole Timothy Kildee’s car and fled the scene before causing a “violent” collision with another vehicle, injuring both people inside.
Mr. Swanson indicated that his son, whose identity was unknown, was in custody. He has not yet been charged.
“We have been in contact with Congressman Kildee, who was in Washington at the time of this incident, and is currently on his way home on commercial flight,” Swanson said. “And, having been informed, he and his family asked the public and the media to respect their privacy.”

The 65-year-old Democratic lawmaker issued a statement on the council’s page thanking the community for their support.
“Our family is saddened and heartbroken. There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy,” said Congressman Kildee. “We would like to thank the community for respecting our family’s privacy during this extremely difficult time.”
Prosecutor David Layton said the suspect’s charges likely include open murder, carjacking, armed robbery and driving offenses in connection with the crash. He added that it could take some time for the toxicology report to be completed.

“This is clearly a tragedy and it involves other families, but we will continue to bring not only answers to questions, but also comfort to families,” Swanson said.
Swanson said there are no other suspects at this time.
The suspect in the shooting was taken into custody at the scene of the accident and is currently hospitalized with serious injuries. Officials said the other two victims are expected to recover.
Back in November 2023, Congressman Kildee announced that he would be leaving Congress at the end of this term.
“The main reasons are personal.The first thing I decided to do was [entered office] I’ve been here for 10 years and it will be 12 years when I leave. But the personal sacrifices we’re making away from our families become harder to justify when we get here, and it’s not just a bit of a carnival, it’s not actually legislating anything of substance. It’s hard to deny. ” Kildee previously said.
