a Michigan Judge A defendant charged with driving while his license was suspended was surprised when he called into virtual court while driving his car.
The hearing held in Ann Arbor on May 15th involved the case of Corey Harris, whose license was suspended.
As Harris joined the Zoom hearing, the assistant public defender introduced himself to Judge Cedric Simpson.
“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” Simpson asked the defendant.

“Actually, I’m pulling up to the doctor’s office,” Harris said. “Give me a second. I’m just going to park.”
Simpson was seen waiting impatiently for Harris to stop the car.
As the hearing began, Harris’ lawyers asked Simpson for an adjournment of “up to four weeks, if the court permits.”

“Okay, maybe there’s something I don’t understand. This is driving with a suspended license. [case]”He was just driving and he didn’t have a license,” Simpson told the public defender.
Harris appeared lost for words and the bewildered judge looked shocked.

“I have no idea why he would do that,” Simpson said. “Therefore, the defendant’s bail will be revoked in this case.”
The judge ordered Harris to report to the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m. that day.
“Oh my God,” Ms. Harris muttered in disbelief, after which her lawyer said he would call her immediately.
