A man from Michigan has sustained significant neck injuries after an incident at a folk music festival, leading to claims that he can only communicate by blinking, according to his family.
Darryl “Ron” Hartman, 37, has been unable to inform the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office about what transpired on the evening of July 12 at the Blissfest Music Festival in Harbor Springs. They disclosed this information recently.
Hartman, along with his dance partner, attended the festival to perform. This annual event, hosted on a sprawling 200-acre farm, attracts around 5,000 attendees each year.
After retiring for the night post-performance, he was later discovered hanging from his tent around 9 a.m. the following morning, bearing two significant cuts on his neck, as recounted by his friend, Terrace Garnier.
Garnier mentioned that Hartman, who works with underprivileged children in Detroit, has been in the hospital for over a week following the reported attack, during which he reportedly lost nearly eight pints of blood.
“He looked like he shouldn’t even be alive right now,” Garnier remarked, emphasizing the seriousness of Hartman’s condition.
The authorities have been in contact with Hartman’s family. A friend indicated that he managed to identify his attacker by blinking and nodding from his hospital bed.
“He let us know who did this, so we have an idea of the suspect. Because that person was white, we think it might have been a hate crime or possibly a crime of passion,” Garnier added.
However, investigators stated they have not uncovered any evidence pointing to hate as a motive for the assault or that Hartman’s injuries were self-inflicted.
“We are dedicated to uncovering the truth, figuring out what occurred that night, and bringing this investigation to a resolution,” the sheriff’s office emphasized.
The Blissfest Music Festival features over 100 artists and is held annually, presenting a variety of performances across multiple venues.
Organizers of Blissfest acknowledged that the incident raised “understandable concern and speculation.”
“Our thoughts are with everyone who reached out with worries following reports of an assault involving someone affiliated with this year’s event,” the festival stated in a recent announcement. They also revealed that from the beginning, they have cooperated with law enforcement in examining the circumstances surrounding this incident.
“Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and those impacted, Blissfest will refrain from commenting on unverified allegations.”
Lastly, the Sheriff’s Office has encouraged the public to refrain from speculation as the investigation proceeds.
