Michigan player's confident statement following Sweet 16 victory against Alabama

Michigan Team Aims for Greatness Post-Sweet 16 Victory

This year’s Michigan basketball team, according to forward Jaxel Lendeborg, is striving for greatness, though he notes there’s no “Fab Five” to speak of.

After leading the Wolverines to a 90-77 victory over Alabama in the Sweet 16, Lendeborg made a bold claim. He expressed confidence in their potential, saying they might just be the best team in Michigan’s history. “We feel like we’re the best team in college basketball. Maybe the best team in Michigan history,” he stated during a sideline interview. He emphasized their commitment to keep pushing toward that goal.

Jalen Rose, a former NBA player and member of the iconic “Fab Five” from the early ’90s, responded to Lendeborg’s comments on TNT shortly after the game. He suggested that if Michigan wins the NCAA Tournament, their efforts could put them in the conversation for the best team ever at the university, which famously won the championship in 1989. “Then we’ll have a discussion,” Rose remarked, highlighting Michigan’s traditionally football-heavy reputation and their desire to excel in both sports.

He continued, if this current team clinches the title, then comparing them to the 1989 squad becomes a valid topic of discussion.

Lendeborg, with palpable confidence, believes the sole obstacle to Michigan’s success lies within the team itself. “We’re going to continue to play our brand of basketball and continue to win,” he asserted.

In the Sweet 16 match, Lendeborg was instrumental, contributing 23 points, with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Michigan was ahead by two at halftime but surged ahead in the second half, outscoring Alabama by 15.

Reflecting on the game’s pace, Lendeborg noted, “We had to set our tempo. We let them control the game in the first half. You can’t play an offensive game against them; they’re all too talented.”

Looking ahead, Michigan State is set to compete against either Tennessee State or Iowa State in the upcoming Elite Eight matchup on Sunday.
