Michigan police identify kids killed after suspected drunk driver plowed into boat club during birthday party

Michigan State Police have released new details regarding a car crash that tragically killed two children at a birthday party over the weekend.

A 66-year-old drunk woman drove her car into Berlin’s Swan Boat Club on Saturday afternoon, causing the driver to plunge eight meters into the building, injuring at least 10 people, police said.

The two children who died were identified as siblings Alana Phillips and Zane Phillips, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Monday. According to a GoFundMe set up by the children’s aunt, the children were 8 and 5 years old, but authorities identified Zayn as 4 years old.

The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office also said charges against the suspects will be announced Tuesday. The woman’s identity has not been released by authorities.

Alana and Zane’s mother and brother are both in critical condition, according to Philip and his aunt. Police confirmed that a 31-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy were seriously injured and are being treated.

A 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman are all in “serious” condition, authorities said. Four women, aged between 57 and 70, suffered minor injuries, and a 10th victim received treatment on her own with minor injuries.

“The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident to ensure the identification of all those who witnessed or were injured during this incident,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “We will update the public as further information develops.”
