University of Michigan Faculty Votes to Reinstate Gender-Affirming Care for Minors
This month, faculty at the University of Michigan made a significant decision. They overwhelmingly supported a resolution to bring back “gender-affirming care” for minors at the Michigan Medicine medical center.
On November 3, the Faculty Senate cast their votes, resulting in 2,432 in favor, 555 against, and 651 abstentions. This overwhelming approval was reported by the Michigan Daily.
The resolution emphasizes that “cisgender individuals under 19 continue to receive various medically necessary treatments, such as hormones and hormone blockers.” It suggests that denying these treatments to transgender minors is discriminatory.

According to the Michigan Department of Health, “gender-affirming care” encompasses medical, surgical, mental health, and support services tailored for transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming patients.
Interestingly, back in August, the University of Michigan had announced a halt to gender reassignment procedures for minors, including hormone therapy and puberty blockers.
Shanna Katari, an associate professor at the university, pointed out that this suspension stemmed from pressure related to the previous administration. She mentioned, “We seem to be yielding to demands and bullying that lack research support. We can’t claim to be leaders if we’re just following others.”

Katari’s research focuses on the experiences of marginalized communities, particularly within sexuality, and includes LGBTQIA2S+ individuals.
Mary Masson, the senior director of communications at the University of Michigan, stated, “Currently, we are not providing gender-affirming hormone therapy or puberty blockers to minors.” She added that the institution is dedicated to comprehensive patient care, including necessary mental health support, to help families make informed decisions.

Masson acknowledged the weight of the decision, assuring that the university is in close contact with patients and families, supporting them through this period.
