Michigan Teacher Sentenced for Sexual Conduct with Minor

A teacher from Michigan recently received a sentence after admitting to having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student he was tutoring. This incident was not just a personal tragedy; it has far-reaching implications, as court records reveal.

Jocelyn Sanromain, 27, was sentenced to four to 15 years in prison during a hearing at the Oakland County Circuit Court. This decision followed her guilty plea to third-degree criminal sexual conduct. It’s troubling—this all started when she was working at Oakside Prep Academy, a charter school located about 30 miles from Detroit.

Her arrest occurred in 2023, and she was formally charged in June 2025. The relationship, which included recording sexual encounters at the student’s home, came to light after Sanromain confided in another teacher. That person took the right step, notifying the authorities, leading to an investigation.

The judge presiding over the case noted the serious nature of the crimes, highlighting the risks involved in taking advantage of minors. She pointedly described the act as “really disgusting.” It’s hard not to feel the weight of those words. A victim impact statement read during the trial from the boy’s mother described the lifelong effects on her son’s life, detailing a painful transition that led to him withdrawing socially and eventually needing to switch to online education for his safety.

Sanromain’s attorney mentioned that his client has mental health issues, saying, “She made a serious error in judgment, much of which has to do with her own mental health.” It’s unclear how much this context might soften the blow of her actions, but it’s a reminder that everyone has challenges, even if they don’t excuse harmful behavior.

As part of her plea deal, Sanromain will have to register as a sex offender for life. It’s a harsh but necessary outcome, as Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald noted, emphasizing the need for schools to be safe environments for children. While it’s true that 16-year-olds can legally consent in some cases, teachers hold a position of authority that complicates this dynamic. The emphasis here is on creating a safe space for students, free from exploitation and fear.

In the aftermath, Oakside Prep Academy described their immediate actions once the allegations were uncovered, reiterating that student safety is paramount. The school is part of the National Heritage Academy System, which claims to educate children on discerning right from wrong.
