A teenager risked his own life to save a driver who fell into a Michigan lake on Tuesday.
John Agnello, 15, was fishing with his mother near a marina on Lake St. Clair when he saw the car go into the water.
“I saw the car go into the air. It was about 15 yards deep. That’s how far it was,” Agnello said. He spoke to WLIX 10.
The quick-thinking teenager and another man jumped into the water and made a beeline for the car, which quickly sank beneath the surface, trapping the woman inside.
The water pressure on the car door made it impossible for them to open it.
Instead, the crew were able to tell her to lower the window before the boat sank beneath the water, leaving them enough time to rescue her.
After Agnello and another unidentified hero escorted the woman to shore, the determined teenager climbed into the submerged car to see if anyone else was trapped inside.
“The only scary thing was I was in the water because I was fumbling around in the car. It was a little bit difficult to get out, but everything was fine,” Agnello said.
Luckily the car was empty.
Police say the driver was taken to a local hospital.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. This was announced by St. Clair Shores Police.
Agnello tries not to get carried away with his heroism.
“I think my family raised me to just take action and do things like that,” he said.
