Microsoft Unveils Draft for Humanist AI Code of Conduct

Recently, Microsoft disclosed a draft for a new “Humanist AI Code of Conduct.” This document lays out the guiding principles for developing AI models and seeks feedback prior to a revised version set for release later this year.

The company mentioned that it will spend the next six weeks gathering input on this draft. The insights collected will help shape the final version of the code, which is expected to direct Microsoft’s AI model development in the coming years.

The principles outlined in the document are meant to steer Microsoft’s AI model evolution into 2027 and beyond. The tech giant indicated it will continue to consult on future revisions of the Code of Conduct over time.

“Our main aim with this Code of Conduct is clear: humans must maintain significant oversight over AI systems to help improve people’s lives,” Microsoft emphasized. The company noted this code is fundamental in how it trains AI models and how it structures controls, operational systems, and cultural values within the organization.

Microsoft CEO on AI Superintelligence

Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, has asserted that ultimate responsibility for AI lies with humans. He articulated the view that technology should primarily serve to enhance human civilization and promote individual well-being. “Science and technology historically have fueled human advancement, delivering substantial benefits across the globe,” Microsoft stated.

They reiterated that, to achieve their goals with AI, it’s critical to design systems with intentionality and clarity on objectives.

Ensuring Control Over AI Developments

When Microsoft initiated its superintelligence project in late 2025, it did so with the intent of ensuring that AI remains under human influence via careful calibration and context-setting by developers.

The company noted that superintelligence—AI capable of surpassing human intelligence—could become the most influential technology ever created. They anticipate that, within the next decade, these systems will outperform humans in numerous tasks.

However, Microsoft cautioned that managing, containing, and aligning such powerful technology represents one of humanity’s biggest challenges. Therefore, they stress the necessity of defining the boundaries of AI capabilities clearly, alongside expressing the excitement and optimism about its potential benefits.

AI Lab Leaders Call for Oversight

The draft, spanning 37 pages, has been in development for several months. Its release coincides with discussions among prominent leaders in the AI field—like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei—who are advocating for increased external oversight to ensure AI models remain aligned with ethical standards.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, remarked in a recent interview that there’s an urgent need for collaboration among AI labs to maintain control over technology. He mentioned that it’s a good moment for stakeholders to pause, reflect, and engage in dialogue regarding AI’s future.
