U.S. Envoy to Visit Moscow Amid Peace Talks

Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Middle East envoy, is set to visit Moscow on Monday, according to a U.S. official. This trip coincides with some hopeful developments in the ongoing peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, as the White House continues to promote a peace plan aimed at resolving nearly four years of conflict.

On Sunday, Witkoff, who plays a crucial role in the discussions for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, met with Ukrainian officials in Florida. This meeting included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and senior advisor Jared Kushner. Rubio described the gathering as “very productive,” emphasizing that the ultimate aim goes beyond merely stopping wars.

“It’s really vital and fundamental,” Rubio stated. “We want to see an end to the suffering, and I believe the Ukrainian side shares this sentiment.” He noted that while everyone desires peace, it is equally important to ensure that Ukraine retains its sovereignty and independence, securing a path to future prosperity.

Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested that Moscow might reject the White House’s proposed framework for a peace deal unless both President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin honor their commitments from their Alaska summit in August.

Putin, however, has expressed a willingness to consider Trump’s plan for ending the war, asserting that the draft serves as a starting point for negotiations. “We need to engage in a serious discussion,” Putin conveyed to reporters, acknowledging that the proposal is a collection of topics for dialogue rather than an official agreement.

“Every word holds significance,” Putin remarked, highlighting the delicacy of the ongoing discussions.
