A teacher in Louisiana, recently celebrated as the “Teacher of the Year,” has been arrested on charges of attempted murder after allegedly shooting at two individuals on the street, according to police.
Kyle Delaney, a 25-year-old middle school educator, was taken into custody following an incident on Tuesday afternoon in Donaldsonville, located around 35 miles south of Baton Rouge. Reports indicate that at least one of the victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds, as confirmed by the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The authorities reported that Delaney approached the victims’ location, got out of his car, and fired several shots before leaving the area. They did not disclose a motive for the shooting.
Police were able to locate Delaney that same evening at a residence in Gonzales, about 17 miles north of Donaldsonville, where he was arrested.
He faces charges including two counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and criminal damage to property. As of Thursday, he remains in jail, awaiting arraignment.
The identities of the shooting victims have not been released, and it’s unclear what relation, if any, they had to Delaney.
Delaney taught seventh-grade social studies at Gonzales Middle School, where he was recognized as the 2024-2025 New Teacher of the Year, according to information on the school’s website.
However, Ascension Public Schools announced on Wednesday that he is no longer with the district. A spokesperson mentioned that due to ongoing law enforcement proceedings, any inquiries regarding the incident or Delaney’s status should be directed to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, and they could not provide additional information on personnel matters.
