NYPD Sergeant John Chell said the thieves are often children under the age of 15.
“In the southern part of the park, there have been a lot of robberies and gang robberies, with young kids attacking people and stealing their property. We believe these robberies are being perpetrated by young migrants,” Chell told reporters.
“These are very young and very impressionable people, and it’s really impacting this group. This is something we’ve never seen before,” said NYPD Deputy Chief of Detectives Jason Savino. “This is one of the first cases I’ve seen in my career.”
Alan Kemp, a city food vendor, said he has become more wary of Central Park since the spike in robberies.
“I can’t stand to be mugged, ripped off, mugged or stabbed,” Kemp said. “I’ve heard of people being stabbed, but I can’t afford that. Not at my age. I’m 68.”
The NYPD plans to deploy drones in parks by the end of the month that will report incidents within a minute and track suspects until police arrive. Until the drones are first deployed, 40 additional officers will be stationed in the parks every night after 7 p.m.
“If you look at the map, you can see where the crime is happening on the south side of the park, maybe between 7 p.m. and midnight,” Chell said. “As you say, we’re going to put in 40 additional officers between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., we’re calling it ‘spot police,’ and we’re going to start there.”
