Georgia Rep. Mike Collins Wins Senate Runoff Against Kemp-Backed Opponent

Rep. Mike Collins emerged victorious over Derek Dooley, who had the backing of Governor Brian Kemp, in Georgia’s Republican Senate runoff on Tuesday. This election marked a significant division between Trump and Governor Kemp, illuminating a rare rift within the state’s Republican party.

As of around 8:15 p.m., with slightly over half the votes counted, Collins was ahead with 54.7% compared to Dooley’s 45.3%, according to NBC News.

Kemp had endorsed Dooley and actively campaigned for him, but in a surprising move, Trump threw his support behind Collins just before the election, creating a notable contest between the two influential politicians.

When asked about his endorsement during a press conference, Dooley played down Trump’s influence. He stated, “My ranking hasn’t changed since the day I entered this race. It’s an honor to have your support, but the most important support I strive for is from the people of Georgia.”

On Sunday, Trump used Truth Social to endorse Collins, describing him as “MAGA” Mike Collins and highlighting his loyalty: “a highly respected congressman who has been with me from the beginning.” Trump also criticized Dooley, remarking that he doesn’t know much about him but suggested that voters would note Dooley’s past controversies, including previous voting habits.

Less than a day prior to the voting, Kemp reiterated his commitment to Dooley by meeting with him and urging Republicans to back him. Addressing his stance, Kemp mentioned he had previously told Trump that Dooley was the best candidate to challenge Senator Jon Ossoff.

The closing days of the runoff were marked by drama, particularly surrounding Collins’ campaign tactics. Reports indicated that both candidates claimed support from various sheriffs and local officials, leading to accusations that Collins had misrepresented his endorsements.

Additionally, Collins faced backlash for a controversial social media post mocking the husband of a woman who accused Matt Lauer of sexual assault. After poll data suggested Collins was ahead, the campaign’s account made an inappropriate comment that was ultimately deleted.

Collins is set to face Ossoff on November 3rd in the gubernatorial and Senate race in Georgia.
