Mike Collins wins Republican nomination for Georgia Senate race

Representative Mike Collins has clinched the Republican nomination for the Senate seat in Georgia, triumphing over former college football coach Derek Dooley in a closely watched primary runoff.

With this victory, Collins moves on to face incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in the general election scheduled for November. This race is pivotal, potentially influencing which party controls the Senate.

During his campaign, Collins positioned himself as a dedicated, “America First” candidate, securing a significant last-minute endorsement from President Donald Trump just ahead of the election.

In contrast, Dooley presented himself as a political outsider with the ongoing support of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a lifelong friend who actively campaigned alongside him.

In his role in the U.S. House of Representatives, Collins was instrumental in sponsoring the Laken Riley Act, the first legislation signed by President Trump in January 2025 during his second term. This law mandates the federal detention of undocumented immigrants arrested for property crimes, named in memory of a 22-year-old nursing student from Georgia who was tragically murdered in 2024 by an illegal immigrant.

The act’s legislative background will likely be a crucial topic in the upcoming Senate race. Notably, Ossoff initially opposed an earlier version of the law but later changed his stance to support the final draft following Trump’s return to office.
