Warriors’ GM Responds to Kuminga’s Trade Request
Mike Dunleavy has impressed throughout his 15-year NBA journey, showcasing his skills on the court. However, on Tuesday night, he emphasized his role off the court, particularly regarding Jonathan Kuminga’s recent trade request.
Kuminga, who asked for a trade after negotiations with the team hit a standstill, received a blunt response from Dunleavy. “As far as demand, we know it exists. But a demand must also be present in the market,” he expressed, just one day after the team suffered a significant loss with superstar Jimmy Butler injuring his ACL.
“I’m always open to discussions. I want to assist our players, whether it’s JK or anyone else on the team. If he desires a trade, we can explore that, but our organization’s best interests remain paramount, especially as the deadline approaches,” Dunleavy added.
Such declarations from a general manager, implying limited interest in his players, aren’t common and hint at a growing frustration on both sides.
The Warriors picked Kuminga with the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, but things have been bumpy since that moment.
Difficulties arose for Kuminga last season, particularly with head coach Steve Kerr, leading him to question his future with the squad. His decision to turn down a three-year, $75 million contract for earlier free agency led to a two-year, $48.5 million agreement this September. A detail from ESPN indicated that the second year is largely a placeholder, allowing Kuminga an earlier exit to free agency.
Currently, this season hasn’t unfolded well for either the player or the team. Kuminga is averaging just 12.2 points, his lowest since the 2022-23 season, and appearing in only 19 of 45 games.
Having recently become trade-eligible on January 15, he swiftly signaled his desire to be considered ahead of the February 5 trade deadline. Kuminga, having missed 16 games due to injury and Kerr’s absence, returned on Tuesday, scoring 20 points in a 145-127 loss to Toronto.
The situation might have been simpler for the Warriors had Butler not gotten injured. Nonetheless, Dunleavy noted that Kuminga may still be a crucial asset for the team’s competitiveness.
“We’ll spend the next few weeks evaluating our team. Before the recent game, we felt confident about our direction. However, things have shifted. We’ll continue observing how our team performs and identify potential areas for improvement,” Dunleavy concluded.
