Mike Johnson Expects to Lead House Republicans After Election

Embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) told reporters on Tuesday that he expects to remain the House Republican leader after the November election.

Johnson appears to feel qualified for the post despite forming a coalition with House Democrats.

He faces a motion to vacate the speakership on Wednesday after allowing Democrats to take over the House to pass President Joe Biden’s campaign promises. Democrats are pleased with Johnson’s willingness to help pass Biden’s agenda. Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers such as Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and establishment Republicans are expected to help Mr. Johnson stay in power.

If Johnson survives the motion to resign, he will likely lead the Republican House until voting day. His primary responsibility is to help Republicans maintain their House majority. Based on the layout of the electoral map, Mr Johnson’s chances of winning appear to be narrow or slim.

“Are you planning on running for speaker again or do you really think your role is just to carry the Republican conference into the November election?” a reporter asked Johnson during Tuesday’s briefing.

“I intend to lead this conference in the future,” Johnson said. “The most important thing we have to do now is govern our country.”

Mr. Johnson’s puzzling decision to work with Democrats to pass Mr. Biden’s agenda came twice in April.

  • April 19: Prime Minister Johnson makes history by relying on Democrats on the House Rules Committee to pass the rules bill through the House of Representatives over majority opposition.
  • April 20: Democrats take over the House and help Johnson clear key procedural hurdles on a rules bill to set up a later floor vote. 165 Democrats and only 151 Republicans voted “yes.”

“Show the American people that we are going to do it and that we are. [governing]” Johnson continued. “We are planning for the next legislative session and have outlined it in detail.”

“If we don’t grow our majority in the House of Representatives, if Republicans and the White House don’t take back the Senate, I think we face a very serious threat to our country,” he added.
