“The security failures that allowed the assassination attempt on Donald Trump are shocking. In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing the formation of a House Task Force of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate this matter,” Reps. Johnson (R-Louisiana) and Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a joint statement. “The task force will be empowered with subpoena power and will act swiftly to uncover the facts, ensure accountability, and ensure this kind of failure never happens again.”
Johnson (Republican of Louisiana) Fox News Last week it was announced that a task force with subpoena powers would soon be formed to examine the security failures that led to the shooting, seek accountability, and ensure such an assassination attempt never happens again in the United States.
Additionally, the task force would be made up of 13 members, including six Democrats and seven Republicans, according to the resolution. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), who was sitting in the front row at Trump’s rally at the time of the assassination attempt, is the lead sponsor of the resolution.
Meanwhile, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said the resolution would likely come up for a vote Wednesday night.
Emmer also said it was his “understanding” that Johnson and Jeffries had outlined all the details clearly and in order, and he expected the task force would receive the support it needed.
The creation of the task force comes after Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday amid calls for her to be fired or resign over security failings at President Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Miraculously, Trump moved his head in time so that the only gunshot wound to the former Republican president was to his ear. However, one rally attendee sadly died after shielding his family from the bullets, and two others were seriously injured. The 20-year-old suspected shooter was shot and killed by a Secret Service counter sniper shortly thereafter.
