Mike Johnson was unanimously nominated Wednesday for a second term as Speaker of the House.
Despite rumors of defection within the House Republican conference, Mr. Johnson ran unopposed and secured the nomination, successfully endorsing the Republican Party for the second time. An official vote will take place in January, when the new parliament begins.
During the meeting, Trump told Republicans he supported Johnson “100%” as chairman.
The House of Representatives has not yet convened, but Republicans are expected to maintain a majority. As of this writing, Republicans had secured 217 of the 218 seats needed for a majority, while Democrats had won 207 seats.
Republicans are expected to maintain a majority in the House, but it is likely to be a narrow majority. As a result, many controversial and consequential votes are likely to be close.
Ahead of the vote, President-elect Trump reaffirmed his support for Johnson in a closed-door meeting with House Republicans on Wednesday morning.
During the meeting, Trump told Republicans he supported Johnson “100%” as chairman.
“He's a great guy,” President Trump said. “I'm with him all the time.”
“Our strong [House GOP] The majority looks forward to advancing your policies that put the American people first! ” said Johnson. saidaddressed Trump in a post on X after the meeting. “As you said, we will unite and accomplish this!”
