House Speaker Mike Johnson has vowed to implement three initiatives if re-elected as speaker of the House.
Neither initiative includes promises about committee appointments or changes to House rules, important aspects of which are often negotiated before a speaker is elected.
Mr Johnson's pledge appeared to be a response to concerns some Republicans had about his previous leadership decisions.
“We must create an emergency financial task force and bring experts on board. ” Congresswoman Victoria Spartz (R-Indiana) Posted X December 30th.
johnson outlined His three initiatives on X before Friday's House vote:
1. Establish a working group of independent experts, not corrupted by lobbyists or special interests, to assist DOGE and us in implementing government-recommended reforms and spending reforms to protect U.S. taxpayers. Cooperate with the committee of
2. Authorize that working group to review existing audits of federal agencies and entities prepared by Congress and issue a report to my office for public disclosure.
3. Push aggressively, including by providing additional resources as necessary, to House committees to expose irresponsible or illegal conduct and to hold accountable government agencies and individuals who weaponize the government against the American people. We request that the government conduct a review of its approval and expenditures.
President-elect Donald Trump endorsed Johnson for Speaker of the House of Representatives and wished him “good luck” in a post on Truth Social on Friday.
Not all House Republicans are impressed with Johnson. Mr Johnson tried to pass a huge pork-filled spending bill in December. A much smaller bill was passed with Democratic support after President Trump pressured Johnson to scale back the bill.
Most notably, Johnson has so far rushed through the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) with few amendments or steps to protect Americans from a weaponized deep state. . The Obama-Biden administration issued a FISA warrant to spy on the Trump campaign in 2016.
Mr Johnson explained that his apparent overturning of controversial surveillance laws was based on secret meetings with intelligence officials.
