Republicans Remain Confident Despite Florida Election Results
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated on Thursday that recent wins by Democrats in Florida, particularly in areas expected to support President Donald Trump in 2024, have not dampened Republican confidence for the upcoming midterm elections.
Democrat Emily Gregory successfully flipped a congressional seat in Florida that encompasses Mar-a-Lago, defeating Trump-endorsed Republican John Maples. This occurred in a district where Trump had double-digit approval ratings heading into 2024. During an appearance on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Johnson remarked that these results do not pose a significant threat to Republicans.
When Baier questioned whether the election results might serve as an early warning sign for November, Johnson firmly disagreed. He mentioned that he had discussed the results with Trump and his team, emphasizing that special elections are often unique and influenced by localized issues unrelated to Congress. “I’m very optimistic about November and the midterm elections,” he stated.
Baier probed further, asking if such Republican optimism was based on a realistic assessment of the current landscape. Johnson responded affirmatively, joking about providing a lengthy presentation to illustrate the party’s strong track record. He cited accomplishments like tax cuts aimed at working families, hoping to reassure voters that their choices in 2024 would reflect positively on them due to changing demographics.
Johnson announced that the party’s first mid-term conference would occur in September, with plans to highlight their achievements and motivate their base. He expressed confidence in retaining voter support, noting improved candidates, increased funding, and a proactive president holding rallies nationwide. “We expect to defy history and see the Republican Party grow,” Johnson said.
In the special election, Gregory won narrowly with 51.19% of the votes, securing 17,113 votes against Maples’ 16,316 votes. She will take over the seat vacated by former Republican Rep. Mike Caruso, who resigned after being appointed to a different role. The campaigns in this tightly contested election collectively spent over $1 million.
Trump had also backed Texas Republican Lee Wambsgans, who lost a state Senate special election in February, despite Trump having a significant lead in that district in the previous election season. In Florida’s 87th Congressional District, while Trump had a nearly 11-point advantage last year, his wins in prior elections have often been by slim margins.
Despite Gregory’s recent victory, the Democrats hold only 34 out of 120 seats in the Florida Legislature, approximately 28%. They hope to increase their share of the state vote in 2024 to around 43%.
