Mike Johnson Voting with Democrats on FISA, Spending ‘Abdicating the Power of the Purse’

During this week’s broadcast of FNC’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) had two important topics to discuss: foreign intelligence surveillance. Criticized for voting in line with Democrats to update the law (FISA) last week, and last month, a $1.2 trillion budget proposal was released.

Paul acknowledged that Senate Republicans also bear some of the blame. But he accused Johnson of relinquishing control of the purse.

“I would also like to ask you about what you heard from the speakers regarding FISA,” asked moderator Maria Bartiromo. “Can we trust the government? Can we trust the government to use FISA appropriately and lawfully?”

“Not at all,” Paul replied. “Americans should not be spied on by their own government. The Fourth Amendment was enacted by the Founding Fathers to protect us. FISA does not comply with the Fourth Amendment. Speaker Johnson was incredibly wrong. He voted for the Democrats. Here, House Republican leaders voted against the warrant request.”

“And House Speaker Johnson is once again voting with the Democratic majority in favor of the spending package,” he continued. “In retrospect, I don’t see a difference between Mike Johnson being in power and the Democrats being in power. Debt — this year’s deficit is $1.5 trillion to $2. It’s going to be a trillion dollars. That’s Mike Johnson’s bill. He supported it with a minority of Republicans and a majority of Democrats. This is not about giving up the power of the wallet.”
