Mike Kafka's future could change in many directions.
The Giants' assistant head coach and offensive coordinator announced Thursday that he is under contract through 2025. This means he could be prevented from interviewing to make a lateral move, even if another team would allow him to regain the play-calling responsibilities he lost as a head coach in 2023. After the 2016 season, Brian Daboll became the manager.
Therefore, perhaps Kafka will return to the same role.
After all, Daboll has already stated that he wants to keep Kafka.
Once again, Daboll is still unable to continue working.
And a new head coach means major staff changes.
“I love being here and I love working for Dave’s and everyone,” Kafka said. “My only focus is really just [facing] Philadelphia. ”
Kafka has interviewed for head coaching vacancies six times over the past two offseasons.
However, it can be difficult for non-playing coordinators to get interviews, so Kafka's window may be closed for now.
The Giants blocked Kafka from interviewing for the Seahawks' offensive coordinator position last offseason, as he was a finalist for the Seahawks' head coaching vacancy, which was eventually filled by Mike McDonald.
He was given a new title and a pay increase, but lost his play-calling duties.
“There was great collaboration among the staff, including input from myself, coaches from other positions, and players,” Kafka said.
DT Dexter Lawrence's wish did not come true.
“I don't want to go to the Pro Bowl alone,” Lawrence said on Aug. 2 in an encouraging message to his teammates.
Now, Lawrence was the only Giant chosen again Thursday.
His third consecutive selection may be his most impressive, as his nine-sack season was cut short at 12 games by a dislocated elbow.
WR Malik Nabors and OLB Brian Burns were selected as alternates for the Pro Bowl.
WR Darius Slayton has been named the recipient of the 24th George Young-Ernie Accorsi Media Good Guy Award for his professionalism and performance during the 2024 season, as voted on by the Giants Chapter of the Professional Football Writers Association of America. Selected.
Slayton received 15 of 18 first-place votes, with LB Micah McFadden, OT Jermaine Elemunor and QB Drew Lock all considered.
McFadden (neck), RT Evan Neal (ribs/hip), C John Michael Schmitz (ankle), and DL Armon Watts (knee) did not practice.
Nabers (toe) was added to the injury report as limited.
