The news hit the baseball community hard when it was announced on Sunday that legendary San Francisco Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper has been diagnosed with throat cancer.
For 36 years, Kuiper has been the voice of the Giants alongside Mike Krukow, who had previously shared in August that he would be stepping down after the 2026 season due to a long battle with body myositis, a degenerative muscle disease he has faced for about two decades.
Krukow, in a discussion with the San Francisco Chronicle about his upcoming retirement, also provided a concerning update on his health.
“When you lose these muscles, falls become a serious risk—you have to be careful to prevent them. The more I use this wheelchair, the more muscle atrophy sets in, and walking becomes harder. It’s reached a point where doing simple tasks is challenging and it’s not likely to improve. I have issues with swallowing now and have to be cautious while eating. That’s just part of my reality,” Krukow informed the publication.
Listening to Krukow mention swallowing difficulties raises concerns, especially given Kuiper’s recent cancer diagnosis. However, it’s important to note that these swallowing challenges stem from Krukow’s muscle condition and don’t indicate any form of cancer.
Nevertheless, for many Giants fans, the health complications affecting their cherished broadcasting duo are tough to absorb.
