Minnesota House Speaker Wins Republican Gubernatorial Primary
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth has emerged victorious in the Republican gubernatorial primary and will compete against a Democratic candidate this November, aiming to succeed outgoing Governor Tim Walz.
This win marks a notable achievement for Demuth, especially considering she continued her campaign after losing the Republican nomination to Kendall Qualls at the state convention. Qualls garnered support after a tense round of voting, but Demuth contended that her experience in the legislature and her leadership of House Republicans positioned her as the party’s top contender for the upcoming election.
Interestingly, Demuth also outpaced Mike Lindell, the MyPillow CEO known for his national visibility and backing from former President Donald Trump.
It’s worth noting that Republicans have not triumphed in a statewide election in Minnesota since 2006, when Governor Tim Pawlenty narrowly secured reelection. Since then, the GOP has faced a staggering 28 consecutive defeats in statewide races, marking a significant 18-year drought—one of the longest for any major party in Minnesota’s history.
Walz Shifts Focus Amid Fraud Allegations
The political landscape shifted dramatically earlier this year when Walz decided to step back from running for a third term. He expressed a desire to concentrate on addressing fraud in national programs rather than prioritizing his political aspirations.
Initially, Walz had launched his reelection campaign months prior, but growing scrutiny around fraud in government-funded programs had become a considerable political liability and the focal point of Republican criticism.
In an unexpected turn, Walz’s formerly steady political career, which saw him gain national prominence as Kamala Harris’ running mate in 2024, took a nosedive. Among his achievements as governor were significant laws expanding abortion access, offering free school lunches, legalizing recreational marijuana, and implementing paid family and medical leave. However, his administration faced ongoing backlash regarding the management of fraud in state programs, with estimates suggesting losses could exceed $9 billion.
As the gubernatorial race heats up, attention has notably shifted towards U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, who decided to enter the contest. This development transforms the election into a challenge for the Republican Party as they face one of Minnesota’s most seasoned politicians, giving the race a bit of a new flavor.
