Mike McDaniel Fired as Dolphins Coach, Expected to Join Chargers
Mike McDaniel has been let go from his position as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins and is reportedly set to move to the Los Angeles Chargers as their new offensive coordinator, “unless he changes his mind,” according to reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that McDaniel has already informed the Chargers of his decision to leave. The expectation across the league is that he will indeed take the job in Los Angeles, although a dinner is planned for Tuesday night between the teams to discuss further.
This decision came as a surprise to many, especially since the Dolphins’ ownership had previously expressed support for McDaniel. Tight end Darren Waller commented on the event, describing it as being “at the scene of a crime” when Dolphins owner Stephen Ross abruptly joined the conversation during McDaniel’s exit press conference.
Waller shared, “I think he came in and joined the conversation. We were all reflecting on the past year, and then Stephen Ross just said, ‘I’d love to have you back next year.’ And then, there was this awkward pause in the conversation.”
Since the firing, McDaniel has been interviewing for various coaching roles, including positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles as a desirable offensive coordinator candidate. However, the allure of coaching Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert seems to be the strongest draw.
In his two seasons with the Dolphins, McDaniel led the team to consecutive playoff appearances, but both ended prematurely in the first round. The following season took a downturn, culminating in an unexpected loss to the New York Jets in their final game.
His last season was tumultuous, marked by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s struggles, leading to his benching in the final three games. Just days ago, McDaniel announced a quarterback competition for the next season, a move Tagovailoa seemed open to, hinting at a potential “fresh start” elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the Chargers under head coach Jim Harbaugh recently parted ways with offensive coordinator Greg Roman following a playoff loss. With a standout player like Herbert—who had an impressive season despite challenges—Los Angeles seems eager to improve and secure its first playoff win under Harbaugh after losing in the wild card round last year.
McDaniel’s transition to the Chargers might offer more stability and opportunity. With a strong quarterback and promising offensive assets, there is a sense of optimism as he steps into this new role.
