Mike McDaniel let go by Dolphins as interest in John Harbaugh grows

The Mike McDaniel Era Ends in Miami

The Dolphins have ended their relationship with head coach Mike McDaniel after a disappointing season, announcing his firing on Thursday. This marks the second consecutive year the team has missed the playoffs, finishing with a record of 7-10.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross stated, “After a careful postseason evaluation and extensive discussion, we determined that our organization requires comprehensive change. This morning, I informed Mike McDaniel that he is being relieved of his position as head coach.”

Ross added, “I love Mike and want to thank him for his hard work, dedication, and the energy he brought to our organization. He has an incredibly creative football mind, and his passion for the game and our players was evident every day. I wish him and his family the best of luck in the future.”

Interestingly, just two days before McDaniel’s firing, the Ravens surprisingly let go of head coach John Harbaugh after 18 seasons. There were reports that Miami had been in touch regarding Harbaugh’s potential availability.

All season long, questions loomed over McDaniel’s future in Miami. Despite a fresh roster for the 2025 season, the Dolphins suffered a three-game losing streak and lost star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to a season-ending leg injury early in the season.

It got more complicated for the team when quarterback Tua Tagovailoa publicly criticized his teammates, later issuing an apology. Additionally, October concluded with the firing of longtime GM Chris Grier.

Although the Dolphins managed to win four straight games, Tagovailoa was benched in Week 15 following a disappointing loss to the Steelers. They opted to develop rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers instead of former Jet Zach Wilson. Tagovailoa, now 27, has expressed interest in starting fresh elsewhere.

McDaniel, 42, had seen initial success as Miami’s head coach, having previously been the offensive coordinator for the 49ers. In his first two years, the Dolphins reached the wild-card round of the playoffs but unfortunately fell short. However, things began to decline in 2024, resulting in an 8-9 record.

The Dolphins now join several teams, including the Giants, Titans, Browns, Raiders, Cardinals, Falcons, and Ravens, in seeking a new head coach.
