Changes in Chargers’ Offense Under New Coordinator
The Los Angeles Chargers’ new offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel, is quickly shaking things up with quarterback Justin Herbert.
As reported on July 2nd, McDaniel is shifting Herbert’s stance from a traditional shotgun position. Previously, Herbert had his right foot in front, but now it’s his non-dominant left foot that’s taking the lead.
McDaniel believes this tweak could provide Herbert with a “millisecond competitive advantage,” which might seem small but could be crucial for timing on quick passes and run-pass option plays.
This isn’t the first time McDaniel has implemented such changes; he has applied similar adjustments while coaching other quarterbacks, possibly even Tua Tagovailoa during their time together in Miami.
Interestingly, McDaniel thinks that this adjustment could relieve some pressure off Herbert’s strong arm. Instead of over-relying on power, he’s encouraging Herbert to focus on proper mechanics, aiming to be quicker and more precise.
It’s worth noting that Herbert has altered his stance before; he used a more balanced approach while playing at the University of Oregon. Yet, he seems somewhat indifferent about the change, stating, “I don’t think it makes much of a difference.”
This will likely be just the beginning of McDaniel’s overhaul for the Chargers. With a reputation for inventive schemes developed in Miami, he’s expected to bring fresh ideas not only for Herbert but for the entire offense.
Of course, any significant changes will still need the approval of Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh. Regardless, fans can look forward to watching Herbert and this revamped offense next season—especially to see if McDaniel’s adjustments really pay off.
