Just hours before the Miami Dolphins came from behind to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill and defensive tackle Calais Campbell were detained by police in what seemed like an abuse of power more than anything. Hill and Campbell were released and helped lead the team to the win, but both players spoke out firmly about the situation after the game.
Hill was also asked about his detention, a harsh reminder of what it means to be black in America.
Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill said he has no idea why he was handcuffed and isn't ready to explain what happened this morning, but is willing to use his position to his advantage.

On Monday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel spoke about the situation, and many of his comments were very thought-provoking, recalling the helplessness he felt as this all happened (via Cameron Wolf of NFL Network).
“The more I thought about it, the more I couldn't help but realize I was becoming more and more upset. And frankly, it's baffling to me that I don't know exactly what that feels like. I'm very proud of our staff for understanding the civic responsibility of our platform.”
It's a reminder that while McDaniel may be considered black by the NFL (the San Francisco 49ers acquired two third-round picks when they hired McDaniel as part of a diversity initiative), the world doesn't see him that way. McDaniel said he's never found himself in the situation Hill or Campbell found himself in because he's a man who is mixed race but looks white. “My appearance helps me on a journey for a lot of people who aren't marginalized,” McDaniel said Monday. “It's important to listen… to realize that your words don't mean anything at all.”
McDaniel's strong response to speaking out about the situation Hill and Campbell found themselves in was a great show of coaching support and also gave many NFL fans a chance for soul-searching. McDaniel wanted to make this stop not about him and how it would affect his performance on the field, but about wanting to help by listening instead of constantly talking.

#Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel became so emotional he was at a loss for words when talking about Tyreek Hill's arrest on Sunday.
“What bothers me, honestly, is that I don't know exactly. I don't know what it feels like.”
