Dolphins Stand by Coach McDaniel Despite Tough Loss
The Miami Dolphins seem resolute in their commitment to head coach Mike McDaniel following the team’s 31-6 defeat to the Browns, which left their record at 1-6.
Owner Stephen Ross is reportedly keen on maintaining McDaniel in his role. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there are currently no plans for coaching changes. However, this could shift as the season progresses.
Rapoport commented on NFL Network, noting that questions about McDaniel’s future, along with that of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, are valid given Sunday’s performance.
Last month, Rapoport had indicated that the Dolphins did not wish to part ways with McDaniel, as Ross is supportive of him and hopeful for better outcomes after an early 0-2 start.
McDaniel, now in his fourth season, made it clear on Sunday that he is not dwelling on job security amid the discussions about it. He stated, “If you’re focused on keeping your job, you need to concentrate on doing it. It’s not right to think about myself at this time.” This showcases his commitment to the team over personal concerns.
Post-game, former Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher shared his observations, suggesting that the Dolphins appeared “apathetic” in their effort against the Browns.
McDaniel referred to the upcoming week as critical, especially with a game against the Falcons (3-3) on the horizon. He acknowledged his players’ frustrations with the current situation, emphasizing the need for impactful performance moving forward. “We have a long job ahead, and the locker room recognizes that,” he remarked.
He also mentioned the importance of evaluating players and improving coaching strategies, noting that emotional responses and self-inflicted penalties played a role in the loss to Cleveland.
Tagovailoa, who had a tough game, completing just 12 of 23 passes for 100 yards with three interceptions—two of which McDaniel labeled “easily preventable”—will remain the starter for the Falcons matchup. He spent part of the fourth quarter on the bench, giving way to rookie Quinn Ewers, who was recently elevated to backup.
The Dolphins faced another setback during the game, losing tight end Darren Waller to a pectoral injury. He’s expected to be out for a while. Meanwhile, they are still missing star receiver Tyreek Hill, who is sidelined after undergoing surgery for multiple serious injuries sustained in a previous game against the Jets. Hill’s recovery will require multiple procedures, leaving the Dolphins with significant gaps in their lineup.
Last year, Miami extended McDaniel’s contract through 2028, reflecting their long-term commitment to him as head coach.
