Mike Pence’s Think Tank Slows Down Justice for East Palestine

Pence Faces Conservative Backlash Over East Palestine Remarks

Mike Pence is currently facing significant criticism from conservative circles and notable MAGA supporters for seemingly prioritizing wealthy donors over the needs of East Palestine, Ohio, and victims of the recent rail disaster.

Like many Democrats, Pence appears to be focusing on obtaining funds from rich contributors, which raises questions about his positioning in the increasingly competitive race for the 2028 Republican nomination. His consistent criticism of Trump comes at a time when he is opposing a safety regulation bill for trains carrying hazardous materials, a proposal first introduced by former Ohio Senator J.D. Vance. Interestingly, Vance may end up being a key rival for Pence in the upcoming primary.

These proposed safety regulations could have potentially averted the toxic spill that devastated the lives of many in East Palestine following the train derailment in 2023.

One notable detail is that Pence’s organization, Advancing American Freedom, is among the groups opposing the bill. This stance is interpreted by some in Trump’s circle as a boon for advancing the bill’s agenda. A senior official indicated that Pence’s opposition tends to elevate the issues at hand in the eyes of the Trump administration.

“It might be worth it for those advocating for the Trump administration to back this bill to fund Pence’s think tank to keep opposing it,” the official remarked.

Recently, Advancing American Freedom collaborated with the Competitive Enterprise Institute to rally think tank leaders against incorporating the Railroad Safety Act into any reauthorization of surface transportation legislation.

In the aftermath of the derailment, both Senator Vance and Donald Trump have stepped up as key figures advocating for the people of East Palestine. Vance swiftly introduced a bill aimed at addressing the fallout from the disaster, garnering bipartisan support despite resistance from industry stakeholders. However, this legislation remains unpassed, and the third anniversary of the derailment has recently arrived.

While President Biden has kept a distance, limiting his public appearances and avoiding a visit to East Palestine, Trump has made his way to the area, pledging to hold responsible parties accountable.

Pence’s remarks, stating that Trump “should never be president again” for neglecting East Palestine, have led to perceptions that he shares more in common with Biden than he does with conservative interests. Critics within his own party have called out his insensitivity, accusing him of valuing his political aspirations over the well-being of East Palestine’s residents.

“Honestly, nobody’s shocked that Mike Pence is opposing the Trump/Vance initiative,” remarked popular MAGA figure ALX on a social platform. “That’s just how it is.”

Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, noted Pence’s choices as prioritizing a non-Trump approach over principles he once advocated.

“He’s clearly attempting to thwart the Trump administration’s efforts to provide justice to the people of East Palestine,” Schilling commented.

Ned Leune, the head of the American Majority grassroots group, expressed his bewilderment at Pence’s actions, questioning how he could act against relief for those affected by the train disaster. His critique suggested that Pence’s apparent obsession with Trump is leading him to make questionable decisions.

Popular MAGA personality Jack Posobiec labeled Pence’s actions as “despicable,” emphasizing that while Trump and his administration persist in aiding East Palestine, Pence seems intent on undermining those efforts.

Critic David Freeman accused Pence of capitulating to lobbyists, stating that he is actively trying to block Trump’s rail safety initiatives after the East Palestine incident, labeling his behavior as treacherous.

The debate surrounding the Rail Safety Act is ongoing in Congress, where Trump and Vance remain firm supporters. The outcome remains uncertain—will Congress advocate for the vulnerable people of East Palestine or align with Pence and corporate interests wishing to maintain the status quo?
