Mike Sullivan praises Matt Rempe as Rangers experiment with a significant fourth line

Rangers Shine in Preseason Opener Against Devils

The Rangers kicked off their preseason with a solid 5-3 win over the Devils on Sunday, showcasing an impressive lineup. Notably towering at 6-foot-7, Dylan Lou Block stood out alongside 6-foot-5 Nathan Aspinel and 6-foot-9 Matt Lempe.

Head coach Mike Sullivan expressed particular enthusiasm about Lempe’s performance. “I thought Remps had a great match,” he remarked after the game held at Newark’s Prudential Center. “He was really strong on the puck and effective in maintaining control.”

Sullivan highlighted that the sheer size of the line makes them challenging for opponents. “Lemps did well to protect the puck and made smart choices throughout the match. I thought he was solid all night,” he continued. “We had him on the net front during the power play, and when he attempted that between-the-legs play, the bench was really fired up. They definitely appreciated his effort.”

Lempe’s size and strength, according to Sullivan, generate momentum for the team. “His goal was outstanding. I noticed his speed during the early days of camp. He’s really in great shape and a strong skater. Sometimes big guys don’t seem that fast, but he covers ground effectively. For someone of his size, he navigates the ice quite well.”

The Rangers’ fourth line had a significant impact, contributing to the scoring early in the second period. Lempe’s speed helped him slide past two defenders, resulting in a goal that ultimately led to a 2-1 advantage at the 3:11 mark.

Brennan Othmann had a challenging game, registering just one shot in 12:30 of ice time. He also faced penalties for major misconduct and elbowing Calen Addison during the third period, raising concerns about potential suspension. Othmann’s struggles highlighted issues with puck management as well.

On a brighter note, Gabe Perrow, along with Scott Moreau, Connor Cearly, and Johnny Brosinski, all contributed goals for the Rangers. Roobroeck had a standout performance, leading the team with two points following Brodzinski’s efforts to secure the second goal, making it 5-2.

In net, Jonathan saved 12 of 13 shots before Dylangerland allowed two goals on 15 attempts.
