Mike Tomlin inks extension to stay with Steelers through 2027

Mike Tomlin’s reign with the Steelers doesn’t look like it’s ending anytime soon.

The team announced Monday that they gave the longtime coach a three-year contract extension to remain in Pittsburgh, keeping him with the team through the 2027 season.

“Mike Tomlin’s leadership and dedication to the Steelers have been critical to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said. From the press release:“Extending Tomlin’s contract for an additional three years reflects our confidence in his ability to lead the team to another playoff and championship victory while continuing our tradition of success.”

It’s not yet clear how much Tomlin will receive financially from the Steelers, but it will likely be a lucrative contract extension.

Tomlin will enter the 2024 NFL season in his 18th year with the Steelers and as the league’s longest-tenured head coach.

His teams made the playoffs in 11 of those seasons, won seven division titles, three AFC Championship Games and made two Super Bowl appearances, winning it all in 2008.

“I’m grateful for this contract extension and would also like to thank Art Rooney II for his support during my first 17 years in Pittsburgh,” Tomlin said. “We will continue to work diligently to get back to our roots of consistent playoff victory with the ultimate goal of winning the franchise’s seventh Lombardi Trophy.”

“We’re excited for the 2024 season to begin and provide our fans with another memorable year.”

Leading up to this announcement was uncertainty as Tomlin was entering a contract year with the Steelers.

Tomlin also fielded a question about the USC head coaching position around Halloween in 2021, but it ended up being a bit of a trick-or-treat. “I wouldn’t say never, but never. I don’t have any backers with a big enough blank check,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin also angrily stormed off the stage during a post-game press conference following last year’s 31-17 loss to the Bills in the wild-card game.

“Mike, you have one year left on your contract,” a reporter began to ask, and Tomlin quickly exited the stage.

There were rumors that the 2023 season would be his final with the team.

But they seem to have been in vain.

Tomlin began his career by extending the NFL record for consecutive undefeated seasons to 17.

He signed a new contract in a battle with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields for the starting quarterback spot.
