Mike Tomlin Resigns as Steelers Head Coach

The historic era in Pittsburgh has come to an end.

Head coach Mike Tomlin has stepped down from his position following a disappointing home loss to the Texans in the first round of the playoffs. This defeat extends the Steelers’ winless streak in postseason games to nine years, as reported by several sources.

At 53 years old, Tomlin has not had a losing season in his 19 years with the team and famously led them to a Super Bowl victory in 2008. However, the franchise has faced significant challenges in the playoffs, suffering six consecutive defeats since their last postseason win in 2017.

Monday’s game saw the Steelers lose 30-6, marking their fifth straight playoff loss by double figures.

There’s uncertainty around Tomlin’s next steps. Will he be a sought-after candidate for coaching positions, perhaps with a team like the Giants? Or could he transition to broadcasting? ESPN’s Peter Schrager indicated last week that a spot was “waiting” for him should he choose to go that route.

Meanwhile, fellow ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler mentioned that someone close to Tomlin hadn’t dismissed the idea of a resignation before Monday’s game.

While Tomlin’s coaching prowess is evident—he’s never had a losing season—the future of the team under his leadership has come into question. The Steelers, previously a dominant force, haven’t truly contended for an AFC title or Super Bowl since the 2020 season.

In the past five seasons, the team has consistently won nine or ten games, and they’ve clinched at least eight wins in seven of the last eight seasons. Yet, they are trapped in a playoff rut, having not advanced past the first round since a loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game back in 2016.

This recent loss to the Texans makes it the third instance in which Pittsburgh has lost in the playoffs at home, joining defeats against the Browns and the Jaguars.

The combination of a nine-year playoff drought and questions about the team’s offensive direction has left many wondering if something needs to change within the franchise. They had struggled to secure a strong quarterback until the arrival of 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers this year, but even his tenure may be temporary.

Tomlin finished his career with a regular-season record of 193-114-2, alongside an 8-12 playoff record, successfully leading the Steelers to the playoffs 13 times during his 19 seasons. The high point was in 2008 when they defeated the Cardinals to claim their sixth Super Bowl, just two years after he took over from Hall of Famer Bill Cowher.

Two seasons later, Tomlin guided the team to another Super Bowl appearance, although they lost to the Packers. Since then, however, the Steelers have struggled, managing only a 3-10 record in the playoffs with just one appearance in the conference championship.
