Mike Tomlin will talk with family before deciding Steelers future

Another big name could join this group in an already star-studded NFL coaching market.

Longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin led the team back to the playoffs, but it's unclear whether he will return to Pittsburgh next season. According to Pro Football Talk.

The Steelers are not waiving Tomlin and have expressed interest in extending his contract, but Tomlin is unsure whether he will return, according to the paper.

This is the first time Tomlin is nearing the final year of his contract, as all of his previous contracts were extended with two years remaining.

According to the newspaper, Tomlin will consult with his family about his future in football and may sign a new contract to remain with Pittsburgh.

Tomlin, who has one season left on his contract, could resign and sit out next year, or wait to see if another team wants to acquire coaching rights from the Steelers.

Another possibility is that Tomlin manages the Steelers next season, completes his contract, and then hits the open market.

If he waited a year, Tomlin would likely become the most coveted head coach.

This offseason, if the coach gets canned by an early playoff exit, he may have to compete with the likes of Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll and Mike Vrabel.

Tomlin, 51, has been the Steelers' head coach since 2007 and has a Super Bowl title on his resume.

And Tomlin is in the midst of another great coaching job, as Tomlin led the Steelers to the playoffs despite shaky quarterback play, first in Kenny Pickett and then in Mitchell Trubisky.

Mason Rudolph has since emerged as a starter, leading the Steelers to wins in all three games in which he started, heading into Monday's wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills.

The game was originally scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m., but was postponed to Monday at 4:30 p.m. due to blizzard-like weather.
