Mike Tomlin's note to the Texans coach in the last game for the Steelers

Mike Tomlin Bids Farewell to DeMeco Ryans After Playoff Loss

On Monday night, Mike Tomlin shared a heartfelt goodbye with DeMeco Ryans following his last game as head coach of the Steelers. Just after Houston secured a place in the regional round with a 30-6 victory over Pittsburgh, Tomlin made his way to midfield, celebrating with the Texans’ coaching staff at Acrizier Stadium.

“Great job, bro. Good luck. Give it a shot,” Tomlin told Ryans as he took the microphone, a moment captured by “Inside the NFL.”

Not long after this exchange, Tomlin announced his resignation after nearly two decades at the helm. “After a lot of thought and consideration, I’ve decided to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” he stated the following Tuesday.

“This organization has meant so much to me over the years, and it’s been a true honor to lead this team. I deeply appreciate Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support. I’m also thankful to the players who gave their all every day, as well as the coaches and staff whose commitment made this journey so fulfilling,” he added.

Tomlin’s record stands at 193-114-2 in the regular season, with an 8-12 playoff record. Prior to kickoff, he even had a lighthearted moment with Ryans, who was making his third playoff appearance in three seasons. “We’re alive, man,” Tomlin said as he hugged Ryans. “I salute you and your group.”

When Ryans replied, “Same with you, brother. Great job,” Tomlin encouraged, “Come on, man, we’re alive. Let’s live tonight. Let’s make sure we get this game tonight.”

While Ryans is set to focus on the Texans’ playoff matchup against the Patriots, the next step for Tomlin is uncertain. Steelers owner Art Rooney II mentioned on Wednesday that Tomlin had indicated he doesn’t plan to coach in the near future. There’s also speculation that he may explore opportunities in television.

Pittsburgh joins several other teams—like the Ravens, Titans, Raiders, Falcons, Browns, Cardinals, and Dolphins—in search of a new head coach. Additionally, reports suggest that John Harbaugh may be in line to become the Giants’ next head coach after being let go last week following 18 seasons in Baltimore.
