Mike Tomlin's remarks following the conclusion of his time with the Steelers

Mike Tomlin Reflects on His Departure as Steelers Head Coach

Mike Tomlin shared his first thoughts on Tuesday after announcing his retirement as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, a position he held for 19 seasons.

“This organization has played a significant role in my life for many years, and it has been a tremendous honor to lead this team,” Tomlin remarked. The decision came after “a lot of thought and consideration.”

He expressed gratitude towards Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their ongoing trust and support. Additionally, he thanked the players for their daily commitment, as well as the coaches and staff for their dedication, which made his journey so fulfilling.

Tomlin stepped away from the Super Bowl-winning team a day after the Steelers suffered a 30-6 defeat at home against Houston in the wild-card round. This marked the team’s seventh consecutive playoff loss. Under Tomlin, the Steelers hadn’t previously experienced such postseason struggles, with their last playoff win occurring in 2017.

In his time with Pittsburgh, Tomlin finished the regular season with a record of 193 wins, 114 losses, and 2 ties, and an 8-12 record in the playoffs. He led the team to a Super Bowl victory following the 2008 season.

“Coaching in Pittsburgh is a unique experience, and I have always taken great pride in being part of this team,” he noted.

“While this chapter is closing, my affection and respect for the Pittsburgh Steelers will remain unchanged. I look forward to the organization’s future and will always be thankful for my time here.”

With Tomlin’s departure, the Steelers are now one of nine teams without a head coach.

In related news, the Ravens, rivals of the Steelers, recently parted ways with long-time coach John Harbaugh after 18 seasons, which adds to a growing list of coaching vacancies.

Harbaugh played his final game with Baltimore on January 4, suffering a 26-24 loss to Pittsburgh, which cost them the AFC North title and a spot in the playoffs. There are rumors linking him to coaching positions with the Falcons and Giants.

It seems that Harbaugh will continue in coaching, but Tomlin’s next steps remain uncertain. Reports suggest that Fox might be a frontrunner if he chooses to move into television.
