In the opening game of the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout faced tough luck, striking out in his first at-bat. This marks Trout’s 12th All-Star appearance in his home state, located just about 40 miles from his New Jersey hometown. Unfortunately, the Angels find themselves at the bottom of the American League West as they head into the break.
The Angels have not made it to the postseason since 2014, making it the longest active playoff drought in Major League Baseball. They joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in this category after last playing in October 2015.
Los Angeles is struggling with a record of 38-59, and the prospect of reaching the playoffs seems slim. Despite the challenges, Trout expressed that the skepticism surrounding the team only fuels his determination to return to playoff action. “I think the fuel of people doubting us is fueling my desire to get back to the playoffs even more,” he mentioned, emphasizing that this serves as a major motivation for him.
Trout debuted with the Angels in 2011, but the team has only reached the playoffs once during his time there. This lack of postseason success has led to questions about whether he might consider moving to another team as he approaches the latter part of his career. Yet, ahead of the All-Star Game, Trout stated he still has goals to achieve in Southern California. “Can I just take the easy way out and leave? Yes,” he admitted, showing some contemplation.
He continued, “But I think – I said this this time last year, it’s the same feeling I’ve been feeling – I haven’t actually sat down and talked to anyone specifically about it, but I know that if things change, there will come a time when you never know. I don’t know. But for me right now, my focus is on getting this club back to the playoffs.”
If the Angels are to make a comeback this season, they’ll need to overcome a 10-game deficit in the wild-card race or an 11.5-game gap to catch the first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West.
Trout’s future with the Angels seems solid, having signed a significant contract extension in 2019 that lasts through the 2030 season and includes a no-trade clause. Although injuries have affected parts of his career, he did enter the All-Star break having played 78 of 97 games, hitting 18 home runs so far.
