Mike Vrabel’s Counseling Decision Sparks Debate

The hosts of ESPN’s “First Take” are questioning the timing of Mike Vrabel’s choice to seek counseling.

The Patriots’ head coach found himself in the spotlight after being photographed with reporter Dianna Russini at a luxury resort in Arizona. In a statement to ESPN on Wednesday, he shared that he would miss the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft due to “receiving counseling.”

Coincidentally, an article from Page Six revealed an older photo of Vrabel and Russini sharing a kiss at a Manhattan bar six years ago. It seems these revelations have added complexity to the current situation.

At the Patriots’ training facility, just before the draft began, Vrabel mentioned he was engaging in “difficult conversations” with family and team members. His decision to attend counseling on such a critical day raised eyebrows among analysts.

“I can’t really comment on their personal lives,” Shea Cornette remarked on “First Take,” expressing discomfort about Vrabel’s absence during the draft. “But it feels a bit like a distraction for the team.” She noted that having to discuss this on air wasn’t ideal for anyone involved.

Cornette raised a point about timing, questioning why counseling had to coincide with such an important moment. Her co-host, Stephen A. Smith, echoed this sentiment, finding it puzzling that Vrabel chose to miss the draft’s final day but remained for the earlier ones.

Vrabel addressed the issue of the photographs by stating that their interaction was “totally innocent.” However, Russini’s decision to resign from The Athletic amid the investigation added further layers to the situation.

While recognizing Russini’s dedication as a reporter, Smith conveyed concern about the potential repercussions and suggested that Vrabel may have exacerbated the circumstances by speaking out instead of remaining silent.
