Vrabel Injured During Training Camp Incident

Patriot head coach Mike Vrabel found himself injured during a joint practice with the Commanders on Wednesday, resulting in some bleeding after a scuffle broke out on the field.

Vrabel, known for his past as a Super Bowl-winning linebacker, jumped into the fray when Treveyon Henderson, a Washington defender, took a hard hit during a play. Things escalated quickly, and the first-year head coach tried to intervene as players became entangled.

According to the Boston Herald, the 49-year-old Vrabel suffered a cut on his right cheek during the incident.

Second-year quarterback Drake May commented that the team is getting “close” and noted a rather bizarre comparison made by someone on the field, where Vrabel’s injury was likened to “Trump bullet injuries,” relating to previous events involving the former president.

May shared that this kind of intensity is what they’re aiming for, emphasizing Vrabel’s leadership on the field. He mentioned that while conflicts can arise during practice, it’s all part of building a strong mentality.

The incident comes just two days before the Patriots’ preseason opener against the Commanders, marking Vrabel’s debut as head coach of his former team.

Having taken over in January after a disappointing 4-13 season under former coach Jerod Mayo, who was expected to succeed Bill Belichick, Vrabel brings a wealth of experience, having coached the Titans for six seasons and leading them to the playoffs three times.

This offseason has showcased Vrabel’s fiery approach. In May, he dealt with issues surrounding superstar receiver Stefon Diggs, managing those discussions internally. He also called out a reporter for seeming disengaged during a media session last month.

The Patriots are set to kick off their season at home against the Raiders on September 7th.
